In 1971, New York Times Reporter James Reston reported on his postoperative pain relief by acupuncture, and that he had also witnessed two patients undergo surgery while under
acupuncture anesthesia. Chuan Leao had been operated on to remove a brain tumor which was causing epileptic seizures, and Chen Chien had surgery to remove part of his right lung and one rib. James talked to the patients, and nurses gave patients fruit during the surgery. On the same day the news of an American landing moon shocked the world. Two great new discoveries were reported on this day, and everyone was asking: What on earth is this new type of medicine?

In 1979, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that acupuncture could be used to treat many cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, urogenital, five sense organs, and neuromuscular system disorders. The list of treatable conditions by acupuncture was updated again in 2002.

In the past two decades acupuncture has grown in popularity in the United States and in the world. The report from a Consensus Development Conference on Acupuncture held at the
National Institute of Health (NIH) in 1997 stated that in the United States, acupuncture is being "widely" practiced--by thousands of physicians, dentists, acupuncturists, and other practitioners--for relief or prevention of pain and for various other health conditions. The NIH stated,
“The data in supporting acupuncture are as strong as those for many accepted Western medical therapies”,
“One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same condition.”
According to the 2002 National Health Interview Survey--the largest and most comprehensive survey of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) used by American adults to date--an estimated 8.2 million U.S. adults have used acupuncture.
Interestingly, today every part of the world, from the north in Russia, to the south in South Africa, to the east in Japan, to the west in
the United States (and also in space - acupuncture needles were carried by Chinese astronauts to treat weightless sickness in 2005) is putting effort in doing research to understand the mechanism and clinical applications of acupuncture.
Click on
www.clinicaltrials.gov to see that the NIH has funded over 80 research projects on Acupuncture since 1997 worth almost one billion dollars in funding. More and more evidence is confirming the complementary and alternative role of acupuncture to western medicine in the healthcare systems.
Over the past three centuries, allopathic medicine dominated Europe and America from the very beginning, and later almost the whole world by employing advanced diagnostic methods, which includes lab testing and imaging, and utilizing powerful interventions, such as antibiotics, chemo- and hormone therapies, surgical procedures, blood transfusion and organ transplantation. Such domination resulted in great achievements in saving lives, understanding the human genome, identifying, treating and preventing many infectious diseases and tumors, and developing sophisticated surgical procedures.
During the past three decades, the public and professionals have also criticized this double-bladed sword, stating that it provides poor understanding and treatment of many conditions, unsatisfactory management of adverse drugs reactions and side effects, prescribing too many antibiotics and delivering unnecessary surgical procedures. Consequently, more and more people are turning to complementary and alternative medicine for answers and solutions.
On the earth, China and Korea are the only two countries where the traditional medical system has never been replaced by western medicine. Even in the 1920s, the traditional Chinese medicine system was still intact even though the Department of Hygiene & Health of the Chinese government ordered to abandon the TCM medical system.
The power of Chinese medicine and acupuncture resides in its unique philosophy, viewing the body and the universe as a whole, and balance as the foundation of wellbeing. Thousands of years of clinical experience in delivering effective treatments with little side effects attest to the strength of TCM. Along with Western medicine, it forms the two arms of mainstream medicine in modern China.
Together with Dr. Bing You, an integrative medical doctor,
Dr. Margit Winstrom,
a primary family practitioner, the Center for Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine embrace the tenets of Western medical science, promotes the integration of TCM into mainstream biomedicine, and strives to provide a safe and solid health care for the public.
